That seems like a cool set of words, could get some interesting camera shots looking through a telescope! Maybe a struggling magician is working part time cleaning at a museum and there's a telescope in the science section that they are very fond of.
Thinking about what kind of magician your character is could really change the story, he could be a magician that works as an entertainer, or you could go down a more fantasy style route and have a sorcerer/wizard kind of magician?
