Animation Shortened Version

This was my submission for the New Designers Screening Prize. I'm pleased that I got it all done, and I definitely have a lot to touch up and work on for the show itself, including lighting, a couple of odd shadows appearing and a couple of frames that hadn't rendered. Seeing a shorter rendered version of my animation has also shown up problems with the scenes that wouldn't have been picked up in the playblast. Adding a gorgeous soundtrack to the animation really brought it together (thank you Phil!). I plan on having a couple more background sounds for the final piece. Anyways my whole animation is still a large work in progress and although I've learnt a huge amount, I still have a lot more to do and learn, but this is what I have so far.

The Cherry Red Shed - Myself - Rough Walk Cycle

I wanted to see how my character is going to move for my animation, so I have roughed out a walk cycle. There's still work to do on the hair movement and due to the cycling of the animation the legs are catching up to the leg swing, but so far this is what I have got :) It's wonderful to finally start animating her.

Minor Project - Animatic 2 - Development

Creating the saw section as it wasn't translating well being hand-drawn. And also adding an image of my Grandad within the animation before the woodshaving section. I would like to add some extra photos as well in other places such as in the room with the boxes scene but haven't quite got to that yet. The first video is of the animatic with the changes in and below are the changes on their own.

Minor Project - Animatic 2 - Development

Here I have been adding more parts to my animation as there were several things that needed to be looked into. I am still working on this so it's not quite yet finalized but is nearly ready to be turned into a full pre-vis.

Progression of Animatic into Pre-Vis

This is currently how far I have got in turning my animation into a pre-vis. I am further behind than I wanted to be as I've had a couple of issues with Maya not enjoying some of the camera angles and having to fix that. I am also working behind the scenes to fix and change areas within my storyboard as I feel its still not quite there so drawing those scenes is still in progression. I am pleased with the majority of the animation as a whole now and it should start speeding up from here.

Minor Project - Animatic 2

After my feedback with Phil, we decided it would be better if my animation was more magical and abstract, playing with sizes, proportions, angles and camera shots. He showed me a video called one-minute puberty [Link Here] where this is demonstrated brilliantly. I have now re-drawn my storyboard (below video) to make it more interesting and magical. I'm determined to get this animation perfect!

Minor Project - Animatic 1 - Revised

There were a couple of things that I didn't like in my previous pre-vis so I have made changes accordingly, there is a section that I've left out and will be seeing Phil today to see what can be done for improvement. Depending on what improvement is needed depends on what task I'll be doing next.

An image of the storyboard extras I added.

Minor Project - Animatic 1

Now that I've got the sound to go with the video and the storyboard, I have created my first animatic version of my new (and hopefully improved) piece. There are still things I am not happy with as some parts of the animation are rushed / out of sync a bit and there are some frames I would like to improve upon.

Minor Project - Adding Sound

I have now after multiple attempts created a voice over for my script. The next part after this will be to create a really rough animatic that can go over the top of this.

My Grandfathers Rocking Horses - Draft 1 - Sound

After a huge amount of editing and very carefully shortening down (shown above), I have finally been able to shorten down the many conversations with my Grandad to a sound file with a script with what was talked about from about 45mins down to about 7 mins. I still feel that it's a little bit long, and more shortening will be needed, however, this is how far I've got. It has taken me a very very long time so I am pleased with my work, but I still need to do some more tweaking and editing.

I have spent so long on this part as I feel if I don't have my sound down perfectly I won't be able to continue with the storyboarding. I do have solid ideas for the next part of this project, I just wanted to get this done as much as possible before moving on. I'm hoping my patience will pay off.

(had problems with sound, is very quiet, will be fixed soon!)

My Grandfathers Rocking Horses - Sound Organising

Above is the process of organising multiple different conversations, some of which were around 40 mins long into a question and answer from my Grandad. After doing this I wrote down roughly every section on paper and numbered each one (as different conversations had slightly different themes) also parts of the conversations could jump around depending on what my Grandad could remember. I then photocopied my notes on what my grandad had said and further colour co-ordinated them based on the subject, as some needed to be moved around. I then cut them up and laid them out on a table so I could organise a fully structured conversation (a couple of pieces got removed as they didn't seem to fit well, more might be removed, depending on how long the conversation is as a whole). I am now in the process of stitching the sound files together and turning that into a script. I am eager to move forward with this as it's taken a lot longer than anticipated.
