I'd like to see you trying either white - or block colour backgrounds - again, picked to co-ordinate - the black is looking a bit nondescript for me. Also - argh! spelling 'sytoplasmic!' - I think you mean cytoplasmic...
In terms of backgrounds, you might want to consider a low-level pattern or some decorative 'noise' - take a look at some of the YPGTTO concept art for a sense of what I mean - look at what the artist is doing to break up some of the flat colour:
