Premise - Pitch OGR - My Grandfathers Rocking Horses

This video interested due to the textures within the main character. The lighting on this piece gave the wood a golden glow.

I adored the simplicity of this world, but how it was packed with moving things to attract your attention.

This was for me very interesting as this piece was created using still images to create a 3d object, packed with even the tiniest details to give the illusion that the wood on the screen is a real object.

I liked the way in which this animation was narrated. I would like my own animation to have either my grandad (with assistance from my Mum and Grandma) to be talking throughout, or I would like a voice actor to say my Grandads words in a very similar style.

Premise - My Grandad's Rocking Horses

My Grandad and my Mum

The main subject for my animation will be my Grandad. He used to create gorgeous rocking horses out of mahogany fully from scratch which I adored playing with from a very young age. After a lot of digging around, I have been able to find images of him with the horses he loved so much. Below is a collection of just some of these precious memories that I would like to use as inspiration for my animation.

I have also found an old videotape of my Grandad with his horses - currently, I am awaiting the tape to be transferred into a digital version so I can look through the hour-long footage to see if any can be added through-out my animation.

Perspectives - The Education System & Equality

For today's task, the rest of my class has three minutes took it in turns to write down a key piece of information/ idea/ question/ book etc stemming off of my two chosen words for the beginning of my written assignment. An interesting topic that kept on arising was how education is treated in different countries. I have also been given some useful book and website places to research to broaden my ideas for my work.

Life Drawing - Week 12

4x10-15 min Chalk turnaround drawings

30 min Pencil, Chalk, and Pro-Marker Drawing
(adopting Rachael's style)
For the second drawing I did I looked at Rachael Holyhead's work (Link to her blog Here) who was also in the class. Our tutor Vicky suggested that we should swap styles, so I looked carefully at how she drew proportion and darkened certain lines using only pencil, and only until I had finished the linework could I fill in the piece using colour. I learnt a lot from this was of working by using a pencil straight away as I feel like I am not as confident with using a pencil first. I followed this technique in my last drawing below and I was very pleased with the final result!

Idea Proposal - Animation

My idea for my final animation was between 4 ideas:

  1. Re-occuring dream (shapeshifting animal)
  2. Siblings (opposites)
  3. My Grandfathers Rocking Horses
  4. Ninja Spirit World (Ninja and the Dragon)
In a group with Alan, it was decided that the 3rd idea based on my Grandfathers Rocking Horses would be the best way forward for this project and animation. I will need to look into themes and previous peoples work (shown below) from this I will pick a theme and work from there. This project will be hugely personal to me and my relationship with my grandparents and I would like to have them speak throughout the final piece if possible. When I was younger I would watch my Grandad bring these gorgeous horses to life and sell them in the area. The colours of the horses were natural with real hair. For his final horse my Grandad decided to choose a deep cherry coloured wood and simply varnish it afterwards showing the seam lines and how the horses were made. I would love to recreate the simple beauty and elegance of the horses into my animation and how I looked up to my grandparents, specifically my Grandad, especially as a child.
